HYNDBURN Council is to reveal plans for the regeneration of Accrington's main shopping street later this week.

Broadway has come in for criticism for some time because of its shoddy appearance, which some claim is putting people off shopping in the town.

A competition to redesign the street was due to be launched, in conjunction with the Royal Institute of British Architects, earlier this year but the idea was scrapped by the council.

Since then officers have been working on proposals to revamp it which are due to be discussed at a meeting of the Town Centre Regeneration Board tomorrow, but have not yet been made public.

At a meeting of the full council last night council leader Peter Britcliffe revealed there would be an announcement later in the week.

He added: "We met with officers this week who unveiled some very good plans for Broadway.

"If we regenerate the area it will be a big boon for the town and will be better for the shops there."
