ROSSENDALE'S journey in the Lancashire FA Marsden Trophy ended the same way as all their other cup exploits this campaign, with a first round exit following a weather affected game at Bamber Bridge's Irongate ground.

A strong wind and driving rain hindered both sides as they struggled against the conditions, with little football in evidence.

The home side went into half-time a goal ahead after a dreadful first half as Chris Ward capitalised on a poor Mark Molyneaux clearance to score from the edge of the box after 17 minutes.

Ian Barker should have levelled matters before the interval but shot straight at the keeper when clean through and the ball was eventually scrambled clear.

Playing with the conditions, Jamie Baguley equalised five minutes after the break, but John Turner took advantage of some poor marking to restore Brig's lead with a back post header.

Baguley twice forced Andy Banks into superb saves from free kicks to keep the home side in front, but it was Turner who had the final say, scoring in the last minute to secure Bamber Bridge's place in the second round.

SOUTHPORT 5

BACUP BOROUGH 1

BACUP Borough were knocked out of the Lancashire FA Marsden Trophy at the hands of Conference North side Southport.

Brent Peters' men put up a good fight after going behind after just 11 minutes through Robinson.

Darren Emmett equalised seven minutes into the second half. But, from there, Southport took control.

Daly put the home side back in front two minutes later before Robinson added his second of the evening.

Kilbane added a fourth goal on 78 minutes, then Flynn killed off the tie two minutes from time.

CHORLEY'S scheduled UniBond League Challenge Cup match against Mossley at Victory Park last night was called off by the referee shortly before kick-off due to a water-logged pitch.
