A BLUEPRINT for more student accommodation in Lancaster has been kicked back.

Developers wanted to demolish a former vehicle repair garage at Victoria Place, off Penny Street, and replace it with a four-storey building to accommodate 32 medical students.

But Lancaster City Council's planning committee said on Monday there was no need for more accommodation in the city centre.

Councillors were also worried the proposed flats would overshadow nearby St Thomas' Church - whose congregation submitted a petition containing 160 names against the plan.

It was also pointed out to members that some windows would look directly into residential flats that were only nine metres away.

Cllr Anne Chapman said that planners should also see some evidence of a contract with the health authority that the flats would be for medical students only.
