REF: the glowing report on New Labour's pensions record by Jack Croysdill, Labour press officer (Citizen November 11).
In actual fact this Government has turned one of the best pensions systems in Europe into one of the worst and it is a scandal. Pensioners have had to cope with ever-increasing Council Tax, Gordon Brown's stealth taxes and price rises generally. Those with PEPs have seen the tax concession withdrawn.
The Pensioners Credit system discriminates against those who saved a certain amount, even though they paid the same contributions and probably more tax. Increases should be across the board, otherwise there is a clear disincentive to save and savings have plummeted under New Labour.
Mr Howard has said the Tories will take steps to restore the pensions and earnings link.
Meanwhile they will make a £7 increase for single pensioners and £11 for couples. Goodbye next year to New Labour and all its immature nonsense.
