PRESTON boss Billy Davies has pledged new signing Patrick Agyemang will excite fans the moment he sets foot on the pitch -- and that well could be tomorrow night.

North End play in front of the cameras for their first televised game since being beaten by Sheffield United in one of Craig Brown's final games in charge.

A decent performance away from home is a must, and not just because it could end their dismal away run which has led to them not winning on the road, in the league, since January.

A lack of firepower up front is partly to blame for North End's inconsistency following the sale of Ricardo Fuller and David Healy and Agyemang could be thrown into the first team tomorrow night, if he is fully fit.

The £350,000 buy has not played for three weeks due to injury.

He's bagged Fuller's number nine shirt, but Davies believes his new player will impress the fans with his own credentials.

"He isn't a replacement for anyone," said Davies: "He will add more firepower and hopefully he will get us one or two goals, which he is more than capable of doing.

"At the same time we still need one or two more faces to add more competition to the team.

"I'm delighted to have Patrick. He's only 24 and I think strikers improve with age so we will make sure he will do that. I think he will excite the fans and do his best for Preston."

Agyemang's comments on arrival at Deepdale from Gillingham should endear him to the fans.

He said: "This is a bigger club, with better players and a lot of ambition.

"I wasn't really happy at Gillingham. I was losing confidence, the team wasn't playing well and I see this as a chance to move up.

"I want the responsibility of having to score goals. As long as I get the service then I want to peg that responsibility on my shoulders because I think it will make me a better player."

The signing ends weeks of frustration for North End after Iain Hulme opted to stay at Tranmere Rovers, and then Millwall pinched West Brom striker Scot Dobie from under Preston's nose.

North End announced they were waiting for a decision from Dobie on the Saturday Preston lost to Leeds, and by the Monday Dobie had announced he was going to Millwall instead.

Agyemang's signing was delayed until his wife had given birth, but North End were confident enough about getting him that they released striker Andy Smith on loan to Stockport. The deal had been called off at one stage but then when ahead after a deal agreed.
