YEARS ago, before the NHS, my doctor used to smoke incessantly.

He continued to smoke until one day he attended an autopsy on one of his patients, where he could see for himself the disastrous effect on the lungs. That was 20 years ago. He has not smoked since.

I have smoked a pipe since I was 18 and am now 88. Without my pipe I might not have had the courage to write this letter - and I would be bad tempered!

I refuse to be hounded by the anti-smoking campaigners. Just like the anti-hunting campaigners, they are trampling on our freedom of choice.

Come on smokers, it is time to fight a rearguard action. The very impressive Remembrance Day ceremony at Prestwich Cenotaph reminded us that some of us actually fought for freedom - but do not shout the odds.

GADIAN,

Whitefield.
