TO supporters it won't seem two minutes since Colne reached the FA Vase semi-final.

To manager Nigel Coates it seems a world away after getting to grips with a higher division and building his squad.

But tomorrow they have the chance to rekindle the memories of last season's memorable Vase run, when they just missed out on a place in the final at the hands of AFC Sudbury.

A year ago they were rank outsiders to win the competition. Now, after last season's feats, they are fourth favourites.

But manager Nigel Coates won't be placing any bets ahead of tomorrow's home game against Congleton Town.

"I'm not making any predictions because they only come back to haunt you," he said.

"One or two of the players have grown up a bit this year, especially in the league, and we're starting to find a bit more consistency.

"And with the players we've added our squad's stronger than this time last year.

"But I'm not saying that we'll go one further than last year in the Vase. It would be nice if we did, but it's all about whatever happens on the day."

Nevertheless, Coates is confident his players are capable of rising to the occasion.

"Last season's a lot to live up to. We were massive underdogs and got further than anybody expected," he said.

"But we seem to get more out of the players in cup competitions for some reason.

"Perhaps it's because they realise it's a one-off game and they have to perform.

"I think we've a chance against most teams as we showed last year, but you never know.

"Congleton did well in the competition and just missed out on reaching the quarter finals, so tomorrow's going to be a tough game.

"I've told the players that what happened last year may never happen again. But hopefully that won't be true."
