A COUPLE have been left terrified after a female burglar broke into their Colne home and demanded cash.

Police in Pendle today described the crime as 'callous' and are appealing for help to trace the woman responsible for the burglary in Dickson Street, in the early hours of Monday morning.

The offence took place at around 6.45am when the offender got into the property after forcing a window.

She was searching an upstairs bedroom when she was disturbed by the male homeowner.

He confronted the thief who made demands for money before escaping.

The offender is described as white, 5ft tall and slim.

She was wearing a dark coloured three quarter length woollen style jacket, dark gloves and a dark scarf wrapped around her head. She spoke with a "sharp, possibly not local, accent."

Police believe it is possible she may have had a male accomplice as a male voice was also heard during the incident.

PC Michael McBain from Colne police said: "This incident was very traumatic for the occupants of the house who awoke to find strangers searching their home.

"I would appeal for anyone with any information which may be of use to us to contact local police on 01282 425001 or to call Crimestoppers free and anonymously on 0800 555 111.

"This offence took place early in the morning so someone on their way to work may have seen or heard something but not realised what was happening.

"If you have any information which can help us crack this callous crime, then please contact us."
