GREATER Manchester Fire and Rescue Service has issued guidelines to ensure householders enjoy a safe holiday over the festive period.
County Fire Officer Barry Dixon said: "There is far more potential for a fire during this period due to candles being lit, fairy lights being used and extra cooking in the home."
He urged householders to test their smoke alarm or, if they have not got one, to buy one.
Residents should also check: Christmas tree lights to ensure the wiring is good; never leave candles burning while unattended; make a fire escape plan.
For a free fire safety check call the target fire hotline on 0800 815 555.
