PLANS to alter the layout of Ramsbottom's popular markets will be heard at the area board's first meeting of the new year.

Elaine Powell, Bury Council's town centres co-ordinator, will give a presentation on the town's Sunday markets and plans to relocate the Sunday car boot market in response to concerns from traders, residents, the East Lancashire Railway (ELR), police and fire authorities.

Concerns include illegal parking as well as the appearance and image of the area.

One proposal is to move the market site to free up the ELR piazza and forecourt for visitor attractions and displays.

Coun Dorothy Gunther, chairman of the Ramsbottom, Tottington and North Manor Area Board, said: "A letter has been sent out to residents and traders surrounding the proposed site but we would welcome input at the area board from anyone who is interested or has a view on this matter."

In addition, there will be the usual open forum for members of the public to raise other issues. There will also be an update on highways and policing matters and youth services.

The board will meet on Thursday, January 6 at Tottington Primary School in Moorside Road, starting at 7pm.
