Jane McDonald captivated television audiences when she topped the bill on a documentary about The Galaxy cruise ship in the early months of 1998. CAROLINE INNES spoke to the singer about her career, a forthcoming tour and life at 40. . .

IT is rare indeed that an entertainer comes along and engages an audience in the spectacular fashion that Jane McDonald has.

But with a 50-date UK tour, a new album and a regular slot on daytime chat show Loose Women, the ever-popular entertainer continues to be one of Britain's most loved stars.

"I am a very lucky woman," she said.

"Whenever I tour its like having 2,000 friends in my front room and they really are people I can be myself with.

"I don't do 'diva' and I haven't created a persona that I have to live up to. My audience knows me so well and have even seen me buying my knickers in Marks and Spencer's.

"And what always amazes me is that my fans are so different. I have a big gay following and they mix in with families, pensioners and young people alike. It is great to look out and see how diverse the whole audience is."

At 40, Jane is very happy with her life and believes that she is finally comfortable in her own skin.

Despite reaching this personal milestone, it has always been her down-to-earth friendliness and straight-talking that has endeared her to millions. And it was this personality that grabbed the attention of the producers of The Cruise.

Jane said: "It was a big shock to be thrust into the media circus but now I am loving life and loving all aspects of my job -- I am having a blast.

"I thought my five minutes of fame would have finished with the Galaxy and, to be honest, I can't believe I am still here.

"At the age of 40 I am more confident than ever and feel great.

"When my marriage broke up I thought my life was over but now I have moved on and recognise myself again.

"I like being single and enjoy being on my own. And for all those women who are going through a separation -- three years on, life is fabulous!"

Jane has been writing her own songs for her latest album, which she promises will include the big power ballads and show-stopping numbers that have become her trademark.

The tracks were recorded in Poland with the 44-piece Polish Radio Orchestra and Jane was overwhelmed by the reception that her Polish fans provided.

"I didn't know what to expect -- but I certainly didn't think I would be treated like royalty! To hear such a big orchestra playing my songs was an amazing and very proud moment and I must admit I had a tear in my eye," she said.

"When we left the studio it had snowed and everything was covered in white. It just felt like something magical was happening and so far the fans have loved my stuff."

Now Jane is preparing for her You Belong To Me tour, which kicks off in January, and has been invited back to appear on Loose Women in April.

She added: "I know I am a workaholic but then this is my vocation.

"I will be doing 48 nights, but then doing 10 shows a week on the ships was good practice and when the band starts up and the adrenaline kicks in every show is like your opening night.

"And when I need to relax I just curl up with a cup of tea and watch Coronation Street like anyone else."

Jane will be appearing at the Guildhall, Preston, on Sunday, January 23. The box office number is 01772 258858. She will also be at the Opera House, Blackpool, on Tuesday, January 25. The box office number is 01253 292029.
