THE conservative prospective parliamentary candidate for Bury South, Alex Williams, may be new to our area but surely he should take advice from "locals" before choosing issues he's going to campaign on.

He asks in his letter (December 24) "When is Bury going to get a fair deal from Labour?"

I urge him to undertake a simple piece of local research. He should calculate the current funding per pupil in Bury, Bury LEA's place in the national funding league table, capital investment in new classrooms / repaired buildings and the number of police posts in the Bury division.

Having worked these figures out he should compare each of them to the situation when Bury had a Tory government and two Tory MPs. (Guide readers might remember this was the time we had massed protests outside Bury town hall against cuts in education).

With regard to Fairfield Hospital, he should find out which government built the new hospital.

It would be really helpful for your readers if he was willing to publish the outcome of his research on this letters page.
