FAMOUS places and landmarks are the most popular spots for scattering ashes, according to a recent survey.

The poll of 750 people by Age Concern has revealed that, if cremated, 43 per cent of people would choose somewhere like the White Cliffs of Dover or Niagara Falls as their final resting place. Only five per cent would choose to have them scattered in a local churchyard or crematorium.

The top five choices were the White Cliffs of Dover, Mount Everest, Niagara Falls, the Great Barrier Reef and the Grand Canyon. Football grounds were also popular spots, with the home of Manchester United appearing in the top ten.

Alan Brown, business development manager for Age Concern Bury, said: "It seems that people today are keen to look beyond tradition when planning their funerals and want a final resting place that truly reflects and celebrates their life.

"Whilst we recognise that Mount Everest may not be practical for all, it highlights a need for us all to make our wishes clear to our loved ones before we die."
