KIDS have been rolling up their sleeves and making their local Salvation Army centre sparkle in a bid to get a new youth club.

A group of 17 youngsters involved in the 'Activ8' project in Carnforth have scrubbed and cleaned out the cellar at the Preston Street centre so it can open as a youth club in the New Year.

Mandy McKnight, of Signposts Carnforth - the charity behind the project - says: "It's all about giving a positive image of young people in their community."

Fellow worker Brenda Downey says young people have even gone so far as cleaning out kitchens at the centre for an Age Concern Christmas party.

The youth centre has already received the backing of Geraldine Smith MP and police.

"There is nothing for teenagers to do in Carnforth and they usually end up hanging around the streets. They just want somewhere comfortable to hang out with their friends."
