A BOOK of condolence has been opened following the tsunami which has devastated huge swathes of coast in South East Asia.

The death toll of those caught by the ocean surge has now reached more than 90,000.

Worst hit were Sri Lanka, Thailand, India, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Maldives.

The book was opened at Lancaster Cathedral on Friday for residents to pay their respects to the victims.

Lancashire police say they do not know how many people from the Lancaster and Morecambe area may have been caught up in the disaster - but say so far there has been no news of any fatalities.

A spokesman for Lancashire constabulary says a team of officers and family liaison officers are on standby just in case.

Thomas Cook travel agent, which has branches in Lancaster and Morecambe, says it currently has many holidaymakers in the Maldives and Sri Lanka.

It says it has flown home holidaymakers in the Maldives who wished to return early, but many people have chosen to stay and complete the holiday as planned.
