L LAWES finds reasons to denounce Christian belief (LET, December 24) and urges the end to teaching of all faiths in schools.

The writer advocates the re-emergence of paganism especially the pre-Christian Roman Saturnalia.

As an atheist, how can L Lawes be in favour of pagan beliefs which themselves embraces the notions of deities, myths and legends?

They, too, are susceptible to exploitation, manipulation and turmoil.

By the teaching of religions, people are educated in different histories and development from earlier times.

Human sacrifice as an example is despised and no longer practised in organised faith, which L Lawes is at odds with, and if the writer got his way, Saturnalia would also have to be propagated to people.

Certainly, the inclusion of early faiths and beliefs into education should be welcomed for a balanced view.
