A MISSING walker today prompted a massive search of Darwen's Sunnyhurst Wood by mountain rescue teams and specialist police officers.

Francis Perkins, 59, of St Alban's Road, Darwen, was dropped off at the beauty spot in the town yesterday afternoon to go for a walk.

But he did not return home and police are "extremely" concerned for his welfare because they said he has been ill recently and was without his medication.

Mountain rescue teams and police officers spent last night and this morning scouring the woods for a trace of Mr Perkins.

The force helicopter and police dogs were also used.

Inspector Graham Ashcroft, who was co-ordinating the searches, appealed for anyone with information on Mr Perkins's whereabouts to come forward.

He added: "We are extremely concerned for his safety as it is possible that he has been out all night without any shelter.

"While our search at the moment is concentrated very much on the woods at Sunnyhurst, we are trying to keep an open mind as to where he may have gone.

"He isn't very steady on his feet and this adds to our concern.

"We are checking with his friends and relatives to see whether they have had any contact with Mr Perkins overnight, but we would urge anyone who has seen him to get in touch with us as soon as possible so we can ensure he is safe.

"His family are desperately worried about him and we are keeping them informed of any progress."

Mr Perkins's wife was today too upset to comment.

Police described Mr Perkins as white, slim, with collar-length grey hair and 5ft 8in tall.

He was last seen wearing a blue checked shirt, grey fleece, blue jogging pants and walking shoes.
