BRASS bandsman and crown green bowls enthusiast Colin Rowson died at his Leigh home on Christmas Day morning, aged 69.

Three days earlier Mr Rowson had played bass with Golborne Band at a memorial concert.

Close friend and fellow bandsman Harold Roberts told the Journal: "I had banded with him and his late brother Alan since 1949, firstly with Leigh Royal British Legion Band which became Leigh Silver Band.

"It was a measure of his loyalty that he remained registered with the one band all his playing life. But he helped many other local bands.

Following the demise of Leigh Silver Band three years ago he joined Golborne Band and they rekindled his old enthusiasm.

What was to be his final appearance took place just three days before his death, when the band, with which I was invited to guest, did a concert in memory of the late Kevin Mole.

Colin was in his younger days very active with local dance orchestras on tenor trombone.

Mr Rowson of Peter Street was employed by the Gas Board for many years before taking early retirement. He was an active member of Leigh Bowling Club and Bedford Liberal Club.

Golborne Band and guest players will be at his funeral on Monday at Bedford St Thomas Church in Chapel Street, Leigh.
