A NEW year upon us. I wonder how many people made and kept their resolutions. I know I did. I only made one, but what a one.

In the corner of my living room I have a nice piece of furniture. It's called a television set and it's costing me needless money every year.

Looking down the listings ever week all I see is cooking, gardening, buying, selling and house makeovers. Oh, and films with whiskers on them.

On average I watch TV two hours per month, sometimes not even that, so I will tell you what I did about it.

I had my TV downgraded to black and white which works out about a quarter of the cost on the TV licence.

And until pay as you view comes into force that's the way it stays.
