A TEENAGER is battling against meningitis after being taken ill at home.
Parents across East Lancashire were today warned to look out for symptoms of the bug, which peaks at this time of year.
The family of Chantelle Salkeld, 13, a pupil at Habergham High School, Burnley, contacted the headteacher last week to inform the school the teenager had meningitis.
Chantelle was taken to Burnley General Hospital after falling ill last Friday and was transferred to Pendlebury Children's Hospital, Manchester. He is now recovering back at Burnley.
Habergham headteacher Stuart Smith has sent a letter to parents from the Health Protection Agency listing the symptoms and easing any concerns.
He said: "We have sent a letter out asking parents to look out for the symptoms and telling them not to worry. Our thoughts are with Chantelle's family and we wish her a speedy recovery."
Regional health bosses have also warned people to be vigilant for signs of the disease.
Symptoms are similar to flu and include fever, headaches, nausea, vomiting, tiredness, shortness of breath and a rash which does not clear when pressed with a glass.
