THE number of fires in Bury over the 12-day Christmas period has shown a slight increase over the previous year.

However, in Greater Manchester, figures for the festive period showed a 32 per cent fall in such incidents, compared to 2003.

Throughout the Bury borough, the number of fires between December 25 and January 5 this year totalled seven, up one on the same period the previous year. There were four injuries, compared with two over Christmas last year. In total, Greater Manchester recorded 97 fires, compared to 141 the previous year. And the number of injuries also fell from 57 to 34.

Two hard-hitting fire safety campaigns and community fire safety advice given by fire service personnel are said to have helped in the overall reduction of incidents and injuries.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Authority chairman, Councillor Fred Walker said: "These campaigns demonstrate our ongoing commitment to protect the communities of Greater Manchester from fire. However, it is important that homeowners still take extra care over the remainder of the winter."
