A YOUTH was captured on a resident's security video hitting another man over the head with a bottle during a street fight, Bury magistrates heard.

Daniel Ainsley (19), of Topping Fold Road, Bury, had admitted assaulting Mr Vincent Hogg causing actual bodily harm.

Mr Mike Wallbank, prosecuting, said Mr Hogg had been returning home from a local pub with friends when another man he knew in a group began to shout and swear at him.

That man then followed him and challenged him to a fight. He was punched in the face and a melee began, which was taped on a security camera belonging to a nearby resident.

Mr Hogg dropped a bag of bottles of beer he was carrying and one which rolled out was picked up by Ainsley who smashed the bottle over Mr Hogg's head.

With the aid of the video, police were able to arrest Ainsley. Mr Hogg had treatment for lacerations and bruising to the head.

Ainsley, after being shown the video evidence, claimed he had acted in self-defence and had never punched Mr Hogg. He had hit him with the bottle but it had not smashed.

Defending solicitor Miss Jo Grant said Ainsley had been on a "bender" that weekend and accepted his appearance in court was a "wake-up call".

After pre-sentence reports, Ainsley was made subject to a community rehabilitation order for 12 months with a requirement to attend the probation service's addressing substances related offending programme, and also ordered him to pay £100 compensation and £120 court costs.
