ELEVEN roads and pavements in Whitefield and Unsworth are to get a New Year overhaul.

Members of the area board gave the green light to the first ten schemes on a list of 22 proposed locations, as recommended by borough engineer Mike Cannon.

They then added an extra pavement they believed needed urgent repair work, bringing the total to eleven.

The locations will be put forward to be included in Bury Council's highways budget for 2005/6.

First on the list were Wavell Drive, Unsworth; Sandown Road, Unsworth; Montgomery Drive, Unsworth; Stanley Road, Unsworth; Gort Close, Unsworth; Mountbatten Close, Unsworth; Kings Avenue, Whitefield; Brookdene Road, Unsworth; Hazel Road, Whitefield and Selby Avenue, Whitefield.

Coun Michelle Wiseman, who represents Pilkington Park, said Parkstone Avenue should also be included.

She said: "I have had 40 or 50 letters of complaint about it and I raised this with Mike Cannon. I don't know whether it has been added last to the list because it was a late-comer or due to priority but I would be happy to swap Kings Road for Parkstone Avenue. Due to the number of complaints I consider it to be very dangerous and hazardous to pedestrians."

Fellow councillors on the area board agreed to add Parkstone Avenue to the final ten.

The list of suggested highways and footways will be added to lists from other areas within the borough and further surveys will be carried out to determine a refurbishment programme within the highways budget in order of priority and according to funds available.
