IN the final match of 2004 the Bury Chess Club's third team travelled to Salford to face an experienced home side.

With the match restricted to six boards because of absences, Bury went into an early lead thanks to Lee Baron, whose victory was followed by solid draws from Sheraz Khalil and captain Brian Forrest.

A loss by Jeremy Peach put the scores level, but Mick Law became the undoubted star of the evening, scoring his first win for a Bury team with a fluent display.

A draw on top board by Peter Logan was then enough for Bury to go home with the points.
