FORMER Bury WRVS volunteers, previously involved in the meals-on-wheels service, are now being asked to devote their dedication to a local befriending group.

Jigsaw Link aims to provide volunteer befrienders on a one-to-one basis with older people who have physical disabilities or hearing/sight impairment.

Project co-ordinator Mrs Eileen Neal has launched her appeal after the news that a section of the local WRVS, which supplied meals-on-wheels, has disbanded after the contract was re-allocated. She said: "I am keen to take advantage of the fact that many local volunteers may now be looking to offer their services in other, or similar, areas.

"Many of our service users are socially isolated and would be delighted just to have someone call to see them on a regular basis. Our volunteers visit people in their own homes at mutually agreed times and regularity. They also accompany our service users on regular social outings."

No expense will be incurred by volunteers as all out-of-pocket expenses, including travel and other costs, are paid for by Jigsaw Link.

Eileen added: "Should any of those dedicated volunteers now find themselves free to offer their services, and if they would like to become involved in equally rewarding work, we would be delighted to hear from them."
