MASKED robbers smashed a hole in the wall of a building society with a van before escaping with a large haul of cash.
Two men, believed to be wielding machetes, broke into the Halifax Building Society at the Longfield Shopping Centre in Prestwich at 5.15pm on Friday.
They drove a flat-backed Transit van into the rear of the building.
The vehicle was later found burnt out.
A police spokeswoman said: "It is believed that two masked men drove a flat backed Transit van into the rear of the building in the Longfield Shopping Centre creating a hole in the wall.
"The men, who are thought to have been carrying machetes, then entered the building through the hole and made off with a substantial amount of cash."
