LANCASHIRE'S vice-chairman Murray Birnie died of a heart attack on Thursday night in Johannesburg, where he had been watching the Fourth Test - he was 67.

Birnie, a chartered mechanical engineer from Haslingden, had been on the Lancashire Committee since 1981 after playing league cricket for 27 years including seven as captain of the North Manchester and South Lancashire League.

He was heavily involved in all major building work at Old Trafford over the last two decades, and also chaired highly successful testimonials for David Lloyd, David Hughes and Lancashire's chairman Jack Simmons - with whom he again worked closely on the committee over the last seven years.
