SAFETY campaigns have successfully helped reduce the number of emergencies firefighters have had to deal with says Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Authority chairman Fred Walker.
Atherton-based Cllr Walker said: "It has been very good news in our area with incidents down by 65 per cent compared with the same period last year - that's very substantial.
"And we've achieved that through our community fire safety campaigns and hard-hitting publicity.
"As a Leigh councillor I'm proud that people have been acting more responsibly and with our firefighters for delivering the safety message.
"I hope we can maintain this trend in 2005 and that people in the Leigh area will continue to respond positively to fire safety advice."
