BURY Council has been nominated for an award after moving from weak to good within two years.
The authority will compete against five others in the most improved council of the year category at a ceremony hosted by the Local Government Chronicle.
Meanwhile, the Audit Commission has reiterated its praise for Bury's achievements in its annual audit and inspection letter.
It says Bury is well placed to improve its services, with a performance that compares favourably with some in the excellent category. It singles out significant improvements in housing, adult social services, libraries and leisure, and environmental services.
However, while the council's financial position and management are sound, the commission warns of pressures in the social services budget and the undesirability of using reserves to help the short-term situation.
