WARRINGTON WOLVES 26, LEIGH CENTURIONS 22: Leigh Centurions coach Darren Abram felt his side had missed a golden opportunity to register their first Engage Super League victory after a 26-22 defeat at Warrington Wolves.

Abram said: "It was a massive improvement on last week's performance but I think we should have won the game.

"I felt we were the better team in the first half and the scoreboard showed it but we moved away from the game plan in the second 40 minutes.

"Our kicking game in the second half fell down which was the difference really because Lee Briers' kicking for Warrington was superb. Every kick he did asked questions of our back three.

"Not many teams will come to the Halliwell Jones Stadium and take two points and we should have today."

Warrington coach Paul Cullen was concerned at the number of errors his side made but was happy to take the two league points.

Cullen said: "We made a lot of unforced errors when we went through the line and you don't need to be a rocket scientist to work out that if you don't have the ball you go into defence and work hard.

"After 12 minutes they were almost gone and buried but we kept giving them the ball back and from the 12th minute to the 32nd minute we didn't complete a single set in that 20-minute spell.

"It was a mark of our character that in 80 minutes Leigh never broke our line with a single play.

"Their first try came off an interception and the two other scores came from kicks that were not dealt with properly."

The scores were locked at 16-16 before the Wolves grabbed two tries in the final 11 minutes to secure the win.

Hooker Jon Clarke crashed over from close range on 69 minutes for his second try of the match and then Lee Briers touched down four minutes later and added the conversion to make it 26-16

Jason Ferris grabbed a try for the visitors two minutes from the end which Phil Jones converted but time ran out on Leigh's brave efforts.

Warrington had made the perfect start and were ahead after just six minutes when Briers and Henry Fa'afili combined to send Clarke over for the opening try and Briers converted.

But the home side were stunned as Leigh rattled up 14 points in an amazing 10-minute spell.

Firstly Fa'afili threw a suicidal inside pass with no supporting player in sight and Jason Kent intercepted and raced 80 metres to score in the corner, and Jones kicked a fine touchline conversion.

Then three minutes later a Ferris kick caused panic in the Warrington defence and Brent Grose's attempted clearing kick deflected into the hands of Rob Smyth to score.

Jones added the conversion and then also kicked a penalty to give Leigh a 14-6 advantage.

The Wolves hit back four minutes before half-time when Martin Gleeson powered his way through to score and cut the deficit to 14-10 at the break.

A Nathan Wood try two minutes after the restart which Briers converted edged Warrington back in front at 16-14 before a Jones penalty levelled matters.

The Warrington's two late tries sealed the win before Leigh hit back with a late consolation.
