HUNDREDS of trees will be planted across the borough by students as Wigan Tree Week takes root.
Wigan Council is working with local schools and community groups in Tyldesley and Golborne to 'green-up' local areas of the borough and encourage children to learn about their natural environment.
Students from Shakerley Primary School, Tyldesley, will plant 200 trees and bulbs on Shakerley Common on Tuesday.
And Year Three pupils from All Saints Primary School, Golborne will plant trees and bulbs and take part in a woodland workshop on Wednesday.
Community Development Worker, Andrea Marshall, said: "Placing children at the centre of our efforts will encourage them to learn about their local environment and give them a sense of pride to see what they have planted in years to come.
"Working with the Forestry Commission and taking children on woodland walks will show them what is on their 'doorstep' and encourage them to use the sites and become more active outside of school."
Mrs Marshall thanked Golden Days Garden Centre, Homebase, and Dalgety Farm and Country Store for their support.
