CHARITY began at home for a Co-op boss living in Bury.

Bill Hoult, president of United Co-operatives, was at Oxfam's Union Street branch to find out more about sustainable aid and building a better future.

The visit was arranged when his group made a donation of £100,000 to help victims of the South Asian tsunami. Half of the figure, a day's profit for the company, will fund immediate relief while the rest will be used by the Co-operatives UK charity fund for longer term projects.

To find out more about what could be done, Elton resident Mr Hoult spoke to staff and customers about the work carried out by Oxfam. He also took a look at the shop itself, including its selection of second hand and fair trade goods.

A Co-op spokesman said: "He was extremely interested by what he saw and could not fail to be impressed by the extent of the operation.

"He was grateful for all the extra understanding that customers and staff gave to him."
