POLICE in Colne today said they were "very fearful" for the safety a pensioner missing in the freezing cold conditions for two days.

Rennie Grimshaw, 72, was last seen near his home in the Burnley Road area of Colne at 10am on Monday, February 21.

Intensive searches by police -- involving specialist search trained officers, mounted branch, the dog unit, police helicopter and Rossendale Mountain Rescue Team -- have so far found no traces.

Posters of the missing pensioner handed out at schools and shops, and to the public, have also had no response.

Inspector Dave Hodson, leading the search, said: "Rennie has been missing for two days and we have had no positive sightings.

"Given his age, health and the very poor weather conditions, we are now gravely concerned for his safety."

The search was to continue today.

Mr Grimshaw is described as a white man, 5ft 8ins tall, slim, with thinning, grey hair.

He wears spectacles and was last seen dressed in a grey V-neck sweater, navy trousers and black timberland shoes.

He was not wearing an overcoat.

Inspector Hodson has appealed for anyone who may have seen Mr Grimshaw to contact police on 01282 425001.
