PROBLEMS posed by a larger neighbour were aired when Fishpool Residents Association held its first public meeting.

Up to 60 people turned up at Fishpool Community Centre in Horne Street, where a range of topics were up for debate.

Among the invited guests were Bury North MP David Chaytor, as well as ward councillors and representatives of the police and Bury Council.

The chief concern of locals were parking and litter problems that they say have been caused by an expansion programme at Holy Cross College.

However, a lack of activities for young people, fear of street crime and the dangers of speeding vehicles were also discussed.

There was a guest speech from Harry Read, who is vice-chairman of the Pimhole Tenants and Residents Association.

He spoke of the benefits of community group action, which helped deliver a renewal strategy for his own area.

Householders at the meeting last Thursday called for "residents only" parking and tougher anti-litter enforcement as a response to the problems around Holy Cross.

Committee member Paul Willan said: "It is a problem that we have only had for the last two years, and it began with the new buildings.

"We have met with the college before, but nothing has been done and this problem needs to be addressed.

"Overall, people were happy that there was a place for them to discuss their concerns and find solutions to their problems."

Although no representative of the college was present, committee members had met to discuss possible solutions with principal Mike O'Hare the previous week.

Deputy principal Janet Nevin told the Bury Times: "We are delighted with the positive and constructive discussions that have taken place regarding the maintenance of a clean and safe environment."
