MPs today demanded that more information is given to parents in a bid to prevent another toddler dying while being cared for by a childminder.

The call came as Joshua Massey-Hodgkinson's mother was told the Ofsted-registered childminder who admitted the manslaughter of her son was not registered to look after children at night.

Wendy Barlow, 38, of Eightacre Avenue, Sabden, pleaded guilty at Preston Crown Court to killing 19-month-old Joshua on April 17 last year. He drowned in the bath late at night while Barlow was drunk.

Yesterday, Joshua's mother, Emma Massey, of St Paul's Terrace, Clitheroe, said she would never have allowed Barlow, a seemingly respected and diligent childminder, to look after her son overnight if she had known she only had a daytime registration.

MPs today demanded that details of types of registration be included on the Ofsted website list of approved childminders - so parents know straight away what childminders are allowed to do.

To gain registration, childminders need to meet 14 standards. Those who wish to look after children at night must meet further standards, including ensuring they have a working listening device or can hear the child without one, being able to respond to an emergency at night and making themsleves aware of bath time arrangements.

It is not known if these criteria would have made any difference on the night Joshua's died - but his mum has said she would not have left him with mother-of-three Barlow if she had known she did not have night-time registration.

Hyndburn MP Greg Pope said: "I am very disturbed by the fact that Ofsted does not make this clear. There are two things it needs to do. It needs to explain why it hasn't been doing this up until now and then make sure it puts this information in black and white in the future.

"The actual difference between the standards may not have saved this boy's life, but knowing what the registration was would have done, because the mother has said so."

Ribble Valley MP Nigel Evans added: "It creates confusion and my heart goes out to Miss Massey because she has followed all the guidance and still lost her son. This needs to be changed.

"I will be raising this in the House of Commons."

Emma said: "It would have Nobody from Ofsted, which is currently investigating the case and assisting in another external inquiry, was available for comment.
