I WRITE in respect of HMS Protector, a former net-layer commissioned in 1938 and which saw wartime service in Norway and the Eastern Mediterranean in 1941. She was damaged by a torpedo and later used as a training ship.
In 1954 she underwent a conversion into an ice patrol ship and in 1955 she was charged with her first trip to the Falklands to assist the British Antarctic Survey parties in their scientific work. She was de-commissioned in 1968. I served aboard her during the 1965-66 commission..
We are inviting past crew members to a reunion on the weekend of April 1-4, at the County Hotel, Llandudno. Our web site is www.hmsprotector.org and our treasurer is Bill Bartlett on 01202 480767.
