SO far this winter my daughter has had her sledge out for just a couple of hours. With global warming it will soon be staying in the shed all year round.

The coming into force of the Kyoto Protocol is a very small step forward. The targets for cutting emissions must soon be raised and more nations must be brought within its scope. It is vital that the USA is persuaded to join with the EU.

A recent opinion poll has suggested that a majority in Britain will eventually vote to support the EU constitutional treaty. This is good news because the Constitution does explain more clearly than the existing treaties how countries within the European Union work together. It makes reform and improvement easier to achieve in a Europe of 25 nations.

Problems like global warming can only be tackled by nations working in partnership. I suspect that many people recognise that attitudes in Britain often have a lot more in common with those of our European neighbours than with those of President George W. Bush.
