LEIGH Miners Rangers hopes of yet another Powergen Challnege Cup run came to an abrupt end when they were beaten 18-12 at Oldham St Annes in Saturday's second round tie.

Miners' chances faded when substitute Danny Galvin was sent off for an alleged use of the elbow a minute from half time.

The Miners were ahead 4-2 at the time thanks to a couple of Dave Radley penalty goals.

The 12 men managed to increase their lead at the start of the second half when prop Andy Forber crossed for a try after a timely interception by Martin Meadows. Sub Craig Wingfield added the conversion.

Saints extra man began to tell and the Miners cause wasn't helped when second rower Danny Mole went off with a suspected broken jaw.

Home stand-off Richard Badby put Saints back into contention with a try in the corner, converted ny full-back Kevin Fitzpatrick. Oldham went in front for the first time when winger John Gillam crossed out wide.

The Miners went close through winger Mark Jones but a second try from Badby sealed Leigh's fate.
