A CLUB which was on the verge of closing down 18 months ago has been given a new lease of life.
The future for the Twelve Apostles, Westleigh Lane, Leigh, looked bleak, but a committee was formed and the Liverpool Catholic Diocese was so impressed by the community work done they sanctioned money to revamp it.
Now the club has been given a £10,000 facelift thanks to fund raising by the committee and members and a loan from the diocese.
The club, which is over 30 years old, has been given a new-look function room, new floor and new carpet
Committee member Helen Coyne said: "It is very much a community base and is used by the Turnpike Theatre, Brownies and Guides and other groups. It would have been a big loss to Westleigh if it had had to close."
On Wednesday night, members of the Sunrise Slimming Club presented a charity cheque for £500 to help Parkinsons Disease sufferers. They have previously boosted the funds of Wigan and Leigh Hospice and Leighs Infirmary's asthmatic unit.
