GREEN fingered school children from Atherton have been putting the finishing touches to a Community Forest at Colliers Wood in Leigh.

Students from Sacred Heart R.C Primary School, Hindsford, planted daffodil bulbs in the forest to add seasonal colour and to learn about the importance of their local environment.

All the classes at the school took it in turns to plant bulbs and also be shown around the wood on a "wildlife safari" by the Forestry Commission Rangers.

Community Development workers, Rachel England from Groundwork Trust and Andrea Marshall from Wigan Council attended the event and helped the children with their venture.

Colliers Wood is part of the Forestry Commission's Community Forests scheme, set up to create recreation and conservation facilities in the North West.

Carrie Morrow, headteacher of Sacred Hearts Primary school, said: "The children really enjoyed getting their fingers dirty and having time out of the class room.

"It's an important part of their education to learn about the environment and we hope to carry on this tradition with the Forestry Commission."
