MOTORISTS had to take evasive action after a huge boulder fell off the back of a lorry on a narrow country road.
The accident happened last Friday afternoon on the A680 Rochdale Road, at Edenfield, when a piece of natural stone was being transported from Scout Moor Quarry by a subcontractor working for Marshalls.
Quarry manager John Leigh, said the accident was caused when a securing chain "malfunctioned". He said: "We have been using sub-contractors to transport our stone from Scout Moor for more than 30 years and this is the first time that something like this has happened. We have an excellent safety record and our sub-contractors' vehicles are examined thoroughly every two weeks. While we are surprised that something like this has occurred, we will be ensuring that our sub-contractors take even more stringent steps when they are transporting our stone."
The stone was re-loaded on to the vehicle and after a police check, the driver was allowed to continue with the journey.
