A BURY woman bravely stepped in when her blind husband's guide dog came under attack from two other dogs.

Mrs Donna Gilchrist intervened when two vicious brindled boxers confronted her husband Joseph (39), and his black labrador-retriever guide dog Nicky which was on a harness.

Although Mr Gilchrist suffered injuries to his hand, his wife and his dog escaped any bites.

The incident happened in Delamere Street, Bury, near to the turnstile entrance to Clarence Park on Sunday.

The owner of the two boxers refused to give his name to the couple. He was aged in his 20s and was with a woman of the same age.

Donna (40), of Greenbrook Close, said: "I told the man who had the two boxers that by law he was required to give his name in case there were any vet's bills. He only said sorry and told me he wouldn't give his name or his phone number. He became quite verbal and aggressive.

"His boxers, brown with stripes, went for my husband's guide dog. The man managed to get control of one of them and I put myself in front of the other dog.

"My husband hurt his hand which had already received an injury. Thankfully, though, the two dogs didn't cause any puncture wounds to myself or Nicky."

Donna told the owner that because the dogs were aggressive, they should be muzzled. "I called the police who were very supportive," she added.
