DRIVERS could be "scooting" through Prestwich if an electronic plan to reduce congestion works.
A system called SCOOT is being installed which will automatically alter traffic signal timings to reflect changes in traffic flow along Bury New Road.
The move follows complaints about tailbacks along the A56 which have been exacerbated by recent developments in Prestwich town centre.
These include the Sainsbury's redevelopment and the Marks and Spencer store, which have led to delays at the Bury New Road/Fairfax Road junction.
The new system should be ready by late summer, and council traffic bosses are going to assess its success before making further changes.
