YOUTH is getting a voice in Prestwich to allow teenagers to speak loud and clear about issues that matter most to them.

And they have a formidable ally in the shape of Bury South MP Ivan Lewis who has given his support to the ten-strong representatives of the towns youth action group.

The group allows young people to have their say on matters which have a direct impact on youth. Run by Bury Council's Youth Services, the group feeds into Prestwich area board and has representatives on its youth cabinet.

In December, as part of their training process, the teenagers visited the House of Commons, courtesy of Mr Lewis. And last Friday, some of the youngsters were guests at the MP's constituency office in Prestwich for a follow-up meeting.

Glenis Harrison, secretary and manager of the youth action group, said: "This group looks at issues affecting young people in Prestwich.

"Youth Services trains these youngsters in how the council works and gives them information on who the relevant officers are, what elected members do, how it all fits together and links to our MPs."

Local teenagers have identified two main issues involving what they see as a lack of transport in certain parts of Prestwich and the absence of bereavement counselling services for young people. Mr Lewis is backing the youngsters in their campaign for improvements to local transport.

The action group comprises young people drawn from youth projects in Prestwich and local schools.
