BATTLING Lancaster City revealed their basic instinct to leave Phil Wilson a happy man as they slammed the door shut on Worksop Town.

Wilson told his men to become harder to beat - especially at home - and the players responded magnificently with grit and determination to the fore as they made it two wins on the spin.

Peter Thomson scored the only goal but the win was built on a rock-solid defence with Paul Sparrow and Joe McMahon outstanding and Andy Scott sparking City attacks with Beckham-esque passes on an excellent playing surface.

That said, the Wilson plan nearly went out of the window inside 45 seconds when Simeon Bambrook was left alone in the box but his shot was saved by the arching Jamie Speare.

City controlled the game from that point, although they lacked the cutting edge which would have put them out of sight by the interval.

With Neil Prince using all his guile and Steve Jones winning the ball in midfield, City almost went ahead on 19 minutes.

The pair combined to set Thomson clear only for keeper Kris Rogers to save at the second attempt.

Then Ryan-Zico Black shot just over but there was another scare for City on the stroke of half-time when Brian O'Callaghan hit the bar with a header.

But that miss from the ex-Barnsley midfielder was his only contribution - and that was a measure of City's dominance.

A few years ago O'Callaghan caught the eye at the heart of Barnsley's then First Division midfield after joining the Tykes from Pike Rovers.

Yet on Saturday he could have stayed in his local pub for the good he did - City simply never let him play.

O'Callaghan did have a hand in City's winner though as he felled Black on the edge of the penalty area on 56 minutes.

After a long delay while Worksop whinged, Thomson once again lived up to his Thierry nickname with a drilled free-kick through the wall and into the net.

The goal spurred City on with Prince testing Rogers a couple of times from distance and Thomson an ace away from making it 2-0 10 minutes after his goal.

Martin Clark sent Black clear down the right and his instin-ctive cross was brought down by the big striker, who then turned and shot in one movement.

Unluckily for him Rogers had scampered into the right position and the ball smacked him in the face before bouncing to safety.
