Coach: 'We can avoid the drop'. Darren Abram reckons the Centurions should be sitting pretty with four points instead of rooted at the foot of the Engage Super League table.

"In our two away games so far (Warrington and Wakefield) we should have come away with victories. If we'd played a bit smarter and defended better in both games we'd be sitting nicely in mid-table now," says the Leigh coach.

"The pleasing factor is that our fitness levels appeared higher than Wakefield's at the end. We were on a high and they were just hanging on praying for the final hooter."

But with tough games against Bradford and Wigan just around the corner it is still hard to see where a first win is going to come from.

Leigh adopted a far more expansive approach on Sunday and looked far better for it. They scored four fine tries and had another disallowed but unless they tighten up defensively, it's going to be a summer-long struggle.

Aussies Ben Jeffries and Sid Domic inflicted most of the damage, each scoring two tries.

A 90-metre solo effort from Jeffries was the one that really killed Leigh off and when Julian O'Neill went through a yawning gap for another six minutes later, the game was up.

But Leigh's fighting qualities again surfaced as they had the final word with a Mick Govin try converted by Phil Jones.

Wakefield had made the perfect start to the second half with a Jason Demetriou try on 42 minutes but, as they had all game, Leigh hit back when debutant skipper Darren Fleary crashed over for a Jones converted try to cut the deficit to 10 points.

Wakefield could not afford to relax even when Fleary was sin-binned just a couple of minutes after scoring

The Wildcats held a 10-point advantage at the break, but for long periods were second best.

Wakefield started positively enough with a Jeffries try inside four minutes before Neil Turley cut the gap with a penalty and Steve Maden levelled things with a try in the corner.

But centre Sid Domic, playing his first game since a hernia operation, scored twice in as many minutes to put Wakefield in control at 16-8.

Turley's self-converted try in the 33rd minute made things interesting but again Wakefield showed just enough extra skill for substitute hooker Sam Obst to score his first try in Super League.

This score came only moments after Leigh had had a try ruled out for a forward pass, showing the visitors were still very much in contention.
