Accrington Stanley finished off the season in style last night as they lifted the Lancashire FA Marsden Trophy.

They hammered Unibond Premier League side Burscough 4-0 in the second leg at the Interlink Express Stadium.

Stanley had already built up a 3-0 advantage in the first leg at Victoria Park a fortnight ago, and never looked like slipping up despite some early Burscough pressure.

"I thought 3-0 at half-time flattered us. We played well second-half, but Burscough did too, and after Jon Kennedy made two world-class saves, everything we hit seemed to go in," said Stanley manager John Coleman.

If the tie wasn't all over before the game, it certainly was after six minutes, when Rory Prendergast finished off a tricky left wing run with a dangerous ball across goal that Burscough defender Dave McKearney could only divert into his own net.

It could have been a different story had Jon Kennedy not produced a flying save to deny Liam Blakeman just a minute earlier.

Lee McEvilly then went close on 16 minutes, before veteran midfielder Paul Cook extended Stanley's advantage three minutes later when he curled a left footed 20 yard shot into the bottom corner of keeper David Newnes' goal.

After Kennedy was again forced into action twice in two minutes just past the half hour mark from Matthew Parry and Ryan Bowen, Stanley were never seriously threatened, and just a minute before the break the Reds were out of sight.

Midfielder Ian Craney burst into the area, but with no clear opening to shoot, he laid the ball to Cook who smashed home left footed from inside the box.

With the trophy secure, and the disappointment of not securing a Conference play-off spot to make up for, Stanley pressed forward.

On 53 minutes Steven Flitcroft was scythed down in the box and Cook, with the chance to complete a rare hat-trick, stepped up only to see his penalty saved.

"It would have been nice to see Paul get his third, but I have now made a new rule that no left footer will ever take a penalty again. That's two lefty's who have taken them in the last few weeks and missed," quipped Coleman.

Just two minutes after the miss, it was four. Prendergast was once again the architect, as he picked out Flitcroft at the back post who hit a low volley past Newnes.

Stanley had other opportunities, as Paul Mullin, Prendergast and McEvilly all went close in the latter stages.

All that was left was for captain Jonathan Smith to balance the joy of lifting Stanley's only silverware of the season, with the disappointment of playing his final game for the club after six years.

"It got emotional towards the end, as I have loved every minute here. I have no regrets about my time -- it has been fantastic," said Smith.
