JOHN McGreal was last night crowned as Burnley's Player of the Year.

The Clarets defender edged out fellow defender Gary Cahill to land the top award at the official dinner held at Turf Moor.

Cahill, who last week picked up ten supporters' awards to cap a stunning debut season, picked up yet more silverware after being named as the Young Player of the Year.

The Clarets' stunning FA Cup third round victory over Champions League finalists Liverpool won the Best Team Performance of a season that brought two terrific cup runs.

And Micah Hyde's superb goal at Blackburn Rovers, followed by the impromptu huddle at the final whistle in the FA Cup fifth round defeat, were honoured with awards for Goal of the Season and Moment of the Season respectively.

For McGreal, the trophy caps a tremendous first season at Turf Moor, since joining from Ipswich Town on a free transfer last summer.

The 32-year-old, who picked up seven Player of the Year gongs at the supporters' bash, has been a rock at the heart of a Burnley back line that has registered 21 clean sheets in 53 matches and holds the second best defensive record in the entire Football League.

That alone is an incredible transformation in fortunes for a club that shipped a disastrous 180 goals in the previous two seasons.

He said: "This award caps a good season, both personally and collectively. We have done fantastically well with the squad we've had and I would say the season has been a success.

"I know people will look and say we are finishing in mid-table, but to be safe with a good ten games to go can be looked upon as a great achievement in my eyes and hopefully now we can build on that next season."

Aston Villa teenager Cahill, who has already been showered with accolades as he prepares to bring the curtain down on his loan spell with the Clarets at Millwall this Sunday, romped home in the Young Player of the Year category.

Jamaican midfielder picked up five Goal of the Season gongs last week for his dipping volley that left Brad Friedel clutching at thin air at Ewood Park in March.

And he earned 90 per-cent of the votes through the club website and text messaging service to pick up a sixth award.
