The England Under 21 international faces a straight choice between Sunderland and Charlton when he returns from holiday later this week and his departure could pave the way for Andy Cole to return to Ewood Park.

Rovers accepted two identical offers for Stead from their Premiership rivals some weeks ago but transfer talks had to be put on hold while the player was out of the country.

However, the former Huddersfield man is now set to return to England and his departure - probably to Sunderland - is likely to be confirmed later this week. Stead's agent, John Seasman, said: "Jon's still away on holiday but he'll be back in the next few days to make a decision..

"Nothing will be happening until then, so there may be a decision later this week.

"Sunderland and Charlton have agreed a fee with Blackburn, who have given permission for him to talk to the clubs.

"I don't expect it to turn into an auction, hopefully it will all be sorted out nice and quickly.

"Jon has the utmost respect for both Mick McCarthy and Alan Curbishley.

"He knows both are wonderful managers. He also sees Sunderland and Charlton as well-established clubs.

"This is a very important decision as it will determine the next stage of Jon's career, so it's a very difficult decision for him."

Stead's likely departure will prompt Rovers boss Mark Hughes into making a move for Cole.

Hughes is a big admirer of the former Manchester United striker and the noises coming out of Fulham would seem to suggest their manager, Chris Coleman, is under pressure to cut his wage bill.

Meanwhile, Rovers midfielder Robbie Savage has hinted he's ready to play for Wales again - just months after announcing his international retirement.

Savage quit in March after a row with new boss John Toshack.
