After reading that Darwen Library Theatre may face cost-cutting measures, I must admit to feeling more than just a little cynical.

I wrote over twelve months ago to the LT to encourage the people of Darwen to support their theatre or risk losing the facility.

It has been apparent recently that there have been cutbacks on the number of music events staged at the theatre which has been Darwen’s biggest ‘tourist’ attraction for the last 10 years.

The current manager, Steve Burch, has done a brilliant job running the theatre and has had the insight and ambition to attract big-name artists to the town such as Julie Felix, Roy Harper, Saxon – the list goes on and on.

If Mr Burch is to be moved to King George’s Hall for financial reasons, then who will replace him? Obviously someone less experienced.

For the director of culture, leisure and sport to refuse to comment on the subject is also not acceptable, and I urge him to come forward and speak up on the issue.

Mr Rigby states that “the level of service provided by the council will not be reduced”.

Well, to be honest Mr Rigby, that does not say very much.

The council provides the venue and I doubt that this will change.

However, what we want to know is, will there be anything worth watching at the theatre?

I totally agree with and share the same concerns of Don Banks and thank him for bringing this to our attention – hopefully before it is too late.

G Ward (Mr), Elswick Street, Darwen.
